Lactation support strengthens bond between mother and baby
Southeast Hospital is dedicated to the care of new mothers and their infants. Our desire is that every baby will begin life with every health advantage. Breastfeeding is the first step in health promotion.
In the fall of 2000, the lactation services team was formed. The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) and other maternal health institutions recommend that all infants be breastfed during the first year and beyond as desired by the mother and infant.
Lactation Services department assists mothers with prenatal education, daily support in the hospital following delivery, and continued support after they are discharged to home. Here more than 75% of new families initiate breastfeeding while in the hospital. All families (both breastfeeding and formula feeding) are seen daily by our consultants. Special attention is paid to the needs of each family and individualized education is given to meet these needs. Families are seen 7 days a week by a RN, IBCLC (experienced registered nurse who is also an international board certified lactation consultant). The consultant is also available 24 hours per day after discharge via phone, text, or email. The program operates a dedicated phone support system and is a regional resource. The goal is that every mother receives the information, skills, and confidence necessary to initiate and maintain her feeding choices.
Call the lactation consultant at (573) 270-5445 for breastfeeding supplies and rental information.
Southeast Hospital also offers Breastfeeding Classes one Saturday afternoon each month at no cost. The class covers breastfeeding benefits, techniques, nutrition and pumping information.
