Camp Super Nova
Camp Super Nova is designed for children and adults with special needs. Super Nova camps are divided into two age groups, 5-12 and 12 and up. Four to five events each year are held at HealthPoint Fitness in Jackson and we have around 30-35 participants for each event. Several of our campers have been with us since Super Nova was started almost 15 years ago.
Super Nova works with a variety of disabilities, like physical, emotional, and behavioral and also helps our campers with community integration, by getting them out in our community with the many different field trips that we take. Field trips include bowling, golf, water park, conservation center and many other fun and exciting adventures. We keep the group very active and involved in their own community.
Super Nova has a high staff to participant ratio which allows us one on one interaction. We have several volunteers each year that help with Super Nova Camp that have helped for a number of years. The Cape County Jr. Leader group has volunteered the past several years and has been instrumental in helping with our camps. You can truly see how much the staff and volunteers love working with these wonderful individuals, because their willingness to keep coming back year after year.
This is an important service that we provide to the children as well as the parents with children and adults with special needs. The parents look forward to these events as well, because they know that their child/adult is in a fun safe environment. We have had the privilege to watch so many of our campers mature and develop functional skills and we have had the pleasure to laugh and cry with them. To these wonderful individuals that we provide camp for, they look forward to each event that we have like movie night, Easter party, summer camp, or fall/Christmas parties. One of our favorite parts is the memories that we make and are reminded off when we see that special individual. Their smiles make it all worth it.
Super Nova Power Hour was offered at HealthPoint Fitness in Cape for children ages 5-12. Participants were able to come and exercise and play for an hour. Activities included band, ball exercises, parachute play, scooters and many other activities that got the children to move and have a good time.
Camp Super Nova is made possible through the Southeast Health Foundation. Without their support Camp Super Nova would not be possible. HealthPoint Fitness staff would like to say a very big THANK YOU to the Foundation for all you do for Camp Super Nova. You make such a big difference in these individuals’ lives by allowing us to provide a fun atmosphere for these amazing individuals.
