Powerful Linear Accelerators

Southeast Missouri Hospital has brought cancer care in the region to a new level with the addition of a powerful new linear accelerator for the Hospital's Regional Cancer center. World-class technology is incorporated into the new Varian Clinac 21EX linear accelerator, which replaced one of the center's two linear accelerators.

Now, Southeast has the same linear accelerator technology found at internationally-known cancer centers including M.D. Anderson, Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Johns Hopkins, Stanford and the Mayo Clinic.

The new accelerator is equipped to deliver Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), the most precise form of radiation therapy available. It can be used to treat tumors that might have been considered untreatable in the past due to close proximity to vital organs and structures. The linear accelerator's 120-Multileaf collimator allows physicians to virtually "paint" on the contours of an irregularly shaped tumor while sparing exposure to healthy tissue.
