Centuries ago, a hospice was a place of shelter for ill or weary travelers on difficult journeys. Today, the word “hospice” is used to describe a special approach in caring for individuals who are on a journey through life’s final stages. Since 1986, when Southeast Missouri Hospital introduced the concept of Hospice care to the region, Southeast Hospice has provided loving, caring support for terminally ill patients of all ages and their families. At Southeast Hospice, together we strive to enhance living along life’s journey.

What Does Hospice Do?

The Southeast Hospice staff develops an individualized plan of care for each Hospice patient and family. In carrying out that plan, the following services are provided based on need:

• Regular visits by a Southeast Hospice nurse (a registered nurse is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week)
• Medical Director who works with the patient's physician and the Hospice team
• Education and training of caregivers about how to care for the patient
• Individual and family counseling with a trained social worker
• Assistance with personal care and light housekeeping by a trained nurse aide
• Assistance with legal and financial matters Spiritual counseling, if desired, with the Southeast Hospice chaplain or local clergy
• Medical equipment, supplies and medications
• Volunteer companionship
• Support for family members for 13 months following the patient’s death and bereavement support groups for adults and children

Who Pays for Hospice?

The mission of Southeast Hospice is to provide care for all who need it, regardless of ability to pay. Southeast Hospice services are covered in a number of ways, including the following:

• Medicare
• Medicaid
• Insurance - most private insurance companies include Hospice as a benefit.
• Personal Funds
• Generous financial contributions from the community also help Southeast Hospice provide care for individuals who cannot pay.

Hospice in a Nursing Facility

Southeast Hospice care is available to residents of nursing facilities just as it is to patients residing in their own homes.
Many of the same aspects of care that are provided in a patient’s private home are also available to nursing home residents.
