Additional Neuroscience Technologies

Southeast Missouri Hospital's Regional Brain and Spine Center provides a variety of additional technologies that offer patients the latest care close to home.

Vagus Nerve Stimulator

For the more than 20 percent of individuals who do not show improvement in seizure control with medications, the vagus nerve stimulator, a small implant often called a "pacemaker for the brain" may mean the difference between a chronic debilitating condition and a relatively normal life.

Southeast's Image Guided Surgery (IGS) System is the same as IGS systems at major metropolitan hospitals, including Johns Hopkins, Barnes, Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York and UCLA.

Neuro-Navigational System

Southeast neurosurgeons perform complicated and delicate surgeries to remove brain tumors and other abnormalities in the brain using a new wireless Image Guided Surgery (IGS) System. This sophisticated system allows the surgeon to use precise detail in performing delicate neurosurgery, and often times means less surgery time for the patient, smaller incisions and quicker recovery.

PRESTIGE® Cervical Disc

  • Replaces a diseased or damaged disc to maintain motion.
  • Made of stainless steel, the device has two articulating components (a ball on top and a trough on the bottom) that are inserted into the disc space and attached to the vertebral bodies.
  • The ball-and-trough design of the PRESTIGE® disc allows for coupled motion with rotation and A/P translation, helping to preserve spinal mobility and alignment.
  • Available in a variety of sizes that allow surgeons to custom fit the patient's anatomy.

PRESTIGE® Cervical Disc

Stainless steel surgical implant indicated to treat patients suffering from degenerative disc disease (DDD) of the cervical spine.

Neurosurgeons Scott Gibbs, M.D., Kevin Vaught, M.D. and Paul Tolentino, M.D. have undergone training to use this device, and have implanted the PRESTIGE® Cervical Disc (.wmv format) since August 2007. Surgical and non-surgical therapies are considered on a case-by-case basis, according to the patient’s symptoms, radiographic findings and patient’s wishes.

The PRESTIGE® Cervical Disc is a new neurosurgical tool that gives these surgeons a state-of-the-art option to achieve the best outcome for their patients.
