Cardiac Progressive Unit

Cardiac Progressive Unit (CPC) is a 23 bed medical cardiology unit. Staff on this unit cares for patients that require close observation, telemetry monitoring and cardiac IV drip infusions. The main diagnoses are: myocardial infarction or heart attack, congestive heart failure, pacemaker implantation, cardiac arrhythmias and chest pain. Patients that have had a cath lab procedure such as a coronary stent or ablation will also be cared for on this unit.

The nurse patient ratio is 1:5 and there are also nurse assistants and monitor technicians to assist in the care of the patients. The average length of stay is approximately four days.


Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Unit

Cardiac Rehabilitation is both an inpatient and outpatient service.  A physician order is required. On an inpatient basis, staff provides education for the cardiac patient with chest pain, congestive heart failure, heart attack, pacemaker, defibrillator, heart surgery and stent placement. They also ambulate inpatients as ordered by the physician with a goal of preventing debilitation. On an outpatient basis, a multi-disciplinary program with exercise, counseling, education, and diet instruction is provided. Ideally, the patient comes in three times per week for up to 12 weeks. Outpatient is covered by insurance with a diagnosis of heart attack, heart surgery, and chest pain with stent placement. Cardiac Rehab is located in the Southeast Medical Plaza, Suite 311 and also in two satellite facilities located at local hospitals in Sikeston and Dexter.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is an outpatient service and a physician order is required. A multi-disciplinary program with exercise, counseling, education and diet instruction is offered to patients who visit the facility two times per week for up to ten weeks. Pulmonary Rehabilitation is covered by insurance with a diagnosis of chronic respiratory disease (COPD, emphysema, asthma, chronic bronchitis, interstitial disease, or pulmonary fibrosis. Pulmonary Rehab is located in the Southeast Medical Plaza, Suite 311.


Cardiothoracic Unit

The Cardiothoracic Unit (CTU) is a 12 bed postoperative cardiothoracic and vascular surgery unit. Immediate postoperative open heart, vascular and thoracic surgery patients are admitted to this unit, as well as patients with other serious medical-surgical conditions. Intensive cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring is provided by highly-trained staff.

The average length of stay for immediate postoperative cardiac surgery patients on this unit is 1-2 days. The nurse-patient ratio is 1:2, with immediate postoperative cardiac surgery patients receiving 1:1 care. Unit Technicians also assist in providing care for these patients.


Endoscopy Services

Endoscopy Services provides over 100 years of combined physician and nursing experience to care for patients needing diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary and gastrointestinal conditions.

Utilizing the latest technology, these specialists offer a comprehensive range of services. These include bronchoscopies, colorectal cancer screenings, diagnosis and treatment of upper and lower GI tract diseases and disorders of the hepatobiliary system such as the liver, gallbladder, biliary tract and pancreas.


Intensive Care Unit

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a 14 bed medical-surgical unit. Highly-trained staff on this unit care for adult patients with actual or potential life-threatening conditions. Care is provided for patients with a wide number of diagnoses, which may include cardiac, pulmonary, neurologic, gastrointestinal, or endocrine conditions. The nurse-patient ratio is 1:2, with 1:1 care provided in the most serious cases. Unit Technicians also assist in providing care for these patients.


Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility (IRF) is a 13 private bed unit which operates on a 24-hr basis. The IRF accepts diagnoses that vary from orthopedic, neurological, amputee, arthritis, brain injury and spinal cord injury and medical patients with acute rehab needs. The average length of stay is 12-14 days with the goal to return to home setting.

Rehabilitation nurses (team) help individuals affected by chronic illness or physical disabilities, achieve their greatest potential, and work toward productive, independent lives. They take a holistic approach to meeting patients' medical, vocational, educational, environmental, and spiritual needs.


Medical Telemetry Unit

Medical Telemetry is a 31 bed unit designed to care for patients with varying medical diagnosis that also need cardiac telemetry monitoring or close observation.  Vasoactive infusions are not administered on this unit.  Common diagnosis for this unit include pneumonia, infectious diseases, respiratory and gastrointestinal disorders and uncontrolled diabetes.

Staff consists of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse assistants and unit secretaries.  The nurse to patient ratio is 5:1.


Neurosciences Unit

The Neuroscience Unit is a 19-bed unit that accepts any neuromedical or neurosurgical patient. This unit is also the designated Stroke Unit. Nursing staff includes the Nurse Manager of Neurosciences, advanced practice neuroscience nurse, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses nurse assistants and monitor technicians. The nurse to patient ratio in this unit is 1:5.

The therapies offered in the Neuroscience Unit include medication administration, telemetry monitoring, respiratory support services, IV therapy, physical/occupational/speech therapy. Patient care includes patient/family education, infection control, patient safety, standards of care, nursing process and discharge planning.


Nursery Unit

A nursery nurse attends the delivery of each and every baby born at Southeast to provide the highest quality of patient care and continues to provide support to parents and care for babies until discharge.

The Region's first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was established at Southeast Missouri Hospital in 1979. Our Level III NICU is equipped to care of sick and premature infants. Our NICU is staffed by experienced healthcare professionals who include board certified, fellowship trained neonatalogists, registered nurses, respiratory therapists, and internationally board certified lactation consultants.


Dennis B. Elrod M.D. Obstetrics and Gynecology Center

The Obstetrics Unit is a 21 LDRP and 4 triage room unit specializing in the Intra-partum (pre-delivery), laboring and post-partum (post-delivery) care of the child bearing woman. The Unit also cares for women with complications of pregnancy, medical complications, labor and delivery including Cesarean sections, female sterilization, complications requiring dilation and curettage, delivery and care of fetal demise and recoveries for these procedures.

Obstetrics patient staff ratio can be as low as 1:1 up to 1:6-8 depending on the diagnosis and the complexity of care needed in individual cases. The average length of stay for the delivering woman is two days.


Oncology Services

The Oncology Unit is an 11 bed medical oncology unit with telemetry capability. Staff on this unit cares for patients who are diagnosed with cancer and its related complications. We also care for patients with respiratory illnesses, diabetes, hematological disorders, and general medical and surgery overflow. Special services include chemotherapy, brachytherapy, inpatient hospice and respite hospice. Cancer is a life altering illness for the patient and their family. For this reason, we address the whole person with caring nursing care and a full range of support services.

The nurse patient ratio is 1:5 and there are also nurse assistants to assist in the care of the patients. The average length of stay is approximately 6 days.


Orthopedics Unit

Orthopedic Unit is an 11 bed unit. Staff on the unit cares for patients that have received total hip, knee, and shoulder replacements, ACL repair and orthopedic traumas.  The unit also provides care to overflow medical/surgical and Neuro patients.  The care provided includes pain management, wound care, medicine administration, proper transferring and repositioning techniques for orthopedic patients.  The family member is included in the care and patient teaching.

The nurse to patient ratio is 1:5-6.  Nurse assistants also help in the care of the patients.  The average length of stay is approximately 2-3 days.


Pediatrics Unit

Pediatrics is an 8-private bed unit that accepts patients up until their 17th birthday. Two patient rooms are designated as special care rooms that can be used for more intense care including close monitoring by the nursing staff. The staff on the Unit cares for any complication, illness or post-operative care that requires hospitalization of the pediatric age child.

Pediatric staffing can be as low as 1:1 up to 1:6 depending on the diagnosis and complexity of care needed. Pediatrics is an all RN staffed unit assisted by pediatric technicians.


Psychiatric Unit

The Psychiatric Unit is a 14 bed locked unit serving clients with mental illness. Common diagnoses treated on the Psychiatric Unit include disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, and psychosis. The Psychiatric Unit is a voluntary unit serving adults 18 and older on an inpatient basis.

The unit is staffed with a multidisciplinary team comprised of a medical director, licensed clinical social workers, recreational therapists and a nursing staff comprised of RNs, LPNs, and Nurse Assistants. All patients are admitted by a psychiatrist with a SXM-IV primary diagnosis and must be medically stable. The average length of stay is 4 days. The primary mission of the Psychiatric Unit is to provide a safe behavioral health care environment and treatment to individuals in need of inpatient mental health services.


Surgical Progressive Care Unit

Surgical Progressive Care is a 15-bed progressive care unit specializing in the care of adult pre and postoperative patients requiring cardiac monitoring. Postoperative open heart, vascular and thoracic surgeries, as well as complicated surgical cases comprise the most frequent diagnosis in this area. The major needs for these patients are cardiac monitoring, arrhythmia control, medications; nutritional support wound management and respiratory care. Patients are discharged from this unit to home or extended care facilities. Also included in this area is a four bed Transitional Care Unit for housing overflow patients during periods of high capacity throughout the hospital.

The average staffing ratio is one nurse to 4-5 patients. The average length of stay is 4-5 days for postoperative surgical patients. Surgical Progressive provides cardiac monitoring and hemodynamic monitoring at the bedside as well as centralized cardiac monitoring for all patients.


Surgical Unit

The Surgical Unit is a 23 bed unit providing care for general surgery patients as well as urology, ear, nose and throat, gynecology, and wound care patients. Telemetry is provided for complicated surgical patients.

The area contains 17 private rooms and 3 semi-private rooms.

The Surgical Unit is staffed with registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and nurse assistants. The nurse to patient ratio is 1:5 and the average length of stay forthe surgical patient without complications is 3 days.


Infusion Services

Infusion Services is a 14 chair infusion center which accepts any patient requiring outpatient treatment under the direction of their physician and within the training of the infusion nursing staff. The infusion staff gives chemotherapy, biotherapy, IV therapy, blood products, hydrations, injections, bone marrow biopsies, thoracentesis, paracentesis, lumbar punctures, dressing changes and PICC catheter incretions.

For those who need infusion after hours, there is 24-hour coverage to better serve our patients.


Acute Dialysis Unit

The Acute Dialysis Unit is a four bed unit providing dialysis therapies for patients who have been admitted to the hospital. In addition to renal dialysis, staff in this area provide care for patients requiring plasma pheresis and continuous dialysis therapy.


Central Sterile Department

The Central Sterile Department collects, decontaminates, disinfects and sterilizes reusable supplies and equipment and redistributes these supplies and equipment on an as-needed basis. We have staff on duty 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
