Southeast Missouri Hospitals Radiation Therapy Department received accreditation status by American College of Radiology in August 2009. We are the 4th hospital in Missouri to achieve this status.

The Regional Cancer Center at Southeast Missouri Hospital continues a 36-year tradition of providing the latest cancer treatment technology and procedures. Now operational in the Center’s Radiation Therapy Department is a Varian Clinac linear accelerator with Dynamic Multileaf Collimator (DMLC). This technology brings cancer care in our region to a new level of excellence.

The new Varian Clinac linear accelerator, which replaces one of the department’s two linear accelerators.

This is the same world-class technology found at internationally-renowned cancer centers such as M.D. Anderson, Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Johns Hopkins, Massachusetts General, and the University of Chicago. It is equipped to deliver Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), one of the most precise treatment forms available.

The new linear accelerator’s 120-Multileaf Collimator allows physicians to virtually “paint” on the contours of an irregularly shaped tumor while sparing exposure to healthy tissue.

Mammography Services

Mammography at Southeast Missouri Hospital is a complete diagnostic exam that includes all possible film views of each breast. The exam is performed by specially trained female technologists, and results are read immediately by a board-certified radiologist. Women will also find it reassuring that Southeast's mammography service is accredited by the American College of Radiology and is listed with the American Cancer Society as a certified program. Mammography patients also receive one-on-one instruction on breast self-exam.

MRI Technician

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Southeast's MRImaging Center, located on the ground floor of the Regional Cancer Center, offers the latest in magnetic resonance imaging. Through MRI, it is often possible to find and diagnose disorders well before some other detection methods are able to do so.

Southeast's MRImaging Center is a self-contained inpatient/outpatient examining center. For added patient comfort and reassurance, the MRI chamber at Southeast is large and includes pleasant track lighting and a fan that circulates fresh air through the chamber. MRI outpatients may utilize easily accessible reserved parking located just adjacent to the Center.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery

In addition, to being the first hospital in Missouri to provide Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). SEMH has continued the commitment to support this program by offering the latest SRS technology. These services are performed on an outpatient basis, offering a high level of precision to both intra and extra cranial applications. This commitment to provide the latest technology and staffing expertise will be evident as SEMH opens the RRC in December 2010.

High Dose Rate Brachytherapy

SEMH offers high-dose radiation therapy for treatment of some early stage breast and gynecological cancers. HDR treatment options allow early stage breast cancer patients to receive a whole course of treatment in just 10 fractions as opposed to the traditional external beam methods that can take up to 6 weeks. Another benefit to the patient is recognized as some GYN cancers can be treated with HDR brachytherapy as an outpatient. The primary advantage to the patient is that no overnight stay in the hospital is required.

Community Programs

Community programs and Support Groups offered at Southeast Missouri Hospital include Turning Point for breast cancer survivors; grief support groups to provide emotional support and education regarding loss and healing, “We Can” support group and an ostomy support group. Other community programs that are supported by SEMH and Regional Cancer Center staff include Relay for Life, We Can Weekend and the Annual Cancer Symposium.
