Reliable Resources for General Information about Diabetes and Healthier Habits

www.diabetes.org - the home site of the American Diabetes Association. Here you can find news about research, fundraising, diagnosis and treatment of diabetes, prevention and weight management. There are also recipes and tips for lifestyle change as well as advocacy for parents and students.

www.mypyramid.gov - interactive site with facts about food, nutrient content, fiber and physical activity. Includes some fun games for kids. Information is offered by the USDA.

www.cdc.gov/diabetes - Centers for Disease Control sponsored site that has a wealth of reliable information about diagnosis and treatment, lifestyle changes and prevention of diabetes.

www.nhlbi.nih.gov/portion - This site features a quiz about "portion distortion" in America. It is an enlightening view of the change in what is considered a "serving" and how much more activity we need to combat larger portions. This site also has a cookbook which you can access online.

This is a colorful, interactive site to help kids and families learn about good health habits - everything from diseases like diabetes to healthy food choices to stress and peer pressure. This site is offered by the Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control.

childrenwithdiabetes.com - good networking site for families and kids with diabetes. Includes information about current research, fundraising and resources.

www.sparkpeople.com - good nutrition and behavior change support for weight loss and improving eating habits. Group support with reliable advice. This site offers a teen option called "sparkteens" which offers tips to teens on living healthier, tracking physical activity and feeling more energetic.
