Health Learning Activities for Children
A minimum of two weeks notice is necessary for all programs. To request a program, call Generations at 573-651-5825. All programs are free.

Billy Body (K-Grade 2)
A large model of Billy shows the anatomically correct position for a limited number of body organs. To help reinforce information, the speaker presents a teaching segment prior to play. Participants have the opportunity to put Billy's anatomy back together.
Approximately 30 minutes

Body Wizard (Grades 4-8)
This interactive program demonstrates the mechanics of the body. Participants count their heart rates before and after exercise, learn about muscle teams, locate and understand tendons and take part in other learning experiences. Adequate space is required for movement around the room.
Approx. 30 minutes to 1 hour

Brains 'R Us (Grades 7-12)
This educational program presented by Southeast's Regional Brain & Spine Center physicians and staff focuses on how the brain works and how we can use it to make decisions. The program can be modified to allow for participant interactions with neuro testing and demonstration of a human brain.

Food Pyramid (K-adult)
On a large board, participants place food choices in appropriate categories and in the suggested quantities for a healthy diet. This activity can be used for a teaching segment or with the Nutrition Bingo Game.
Approx. 30 minute

Glow Germs (K-Adult)
Proper hand washing is the focus of this activity. After a discussion on the importance of hand washing in preventing the spread of infectious diseases and on effective techniques for hand washing, "glow germs" are applied to each participants hands. They look at the fake germs under black light, wash their hands and come back to look under the black light again to check the effectiveness of their hand washing. A sink, hand soap and paper towels should be easily available to participants.
Allow 30 minutes or more, depending on number of participants

Health Smart Bingo (K-Grade 3)
The categories in this Bingo game are the body, diet, health, safety and poisons. Generations Staff members direct play with interactive learning activities.

Healthy Millionaire Game (grade 4-12)
This game is similar to TV's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? with health-related topics.

Healthy Pursuit (Grade 4-Adult)
Questions in this game pertain to nutrition, human anatomy, healthy lifestyles, sports safety, and injury response. The game is designed for team play. Teams must answer at least one question in each of the six specific game categories. An educational segment, presented by Generations staff members, precedes game play and continues throughout.

Heart Power (Pre-K to Grade 8)
Heart Power is a set of materials designed to help teach healthy lifestyles and includes the topics of nutrition, physical activity, living tobacco free and the workings of the heart.

Internet Safety (grade 3-adult)
The Internet is not regulated, and safety issues abound. This is especially true when it comes to young people using the Internet. This Powerpoint Presentation focuses on safety risks, filtering software and advice for safer surfer with your family.

Jeopardy (Grades 3 to Adult)
A large game board contains grade level questions on human anatomy, nutrition, safety, smoking, health and wellness. Issues that pertain to the upper grade levels may also be incorporated into this game. Classes are divided into teams, and compete for categories and point values.

Nutrition Bingo (Age 8 to Adult)
This game utilizes the food guide pyramid in an interactive and informative way that promotes enthusiasm and makes nutrition fun and interesting to learn. Repetition of information through playing helps participants take in the knowledge more completely.

Pyramid Challenge (Grade 5-Adult)
A large game board is used to display topics pertaining to human health. Groups are divided into teams and play begins when one team member chooses a topic and gives clues to the other team members in an attempt to describe the key words. Approx. 45 minutes

Say Cheese (grade K-3)
This dental program stresses the importance of caring for our teeth through proper brushing, flossing, visiting the dentist and eating health snacks.

POISON PREVENTION PROGRAMS

Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten
Orientation Program (ages 3-6)
This program teaches children what poison is, how people are poisoned and introduces this to "Mr. Yuk" who helps them stay away from poison.
30 minutes.

Elementary Program (grade 1-6)
Reinforces poison and Mr. Yuk concept. Older children learn how to handle poison emergencies.
Approx. 30 to 60 minutes

Poison Prevention for Adolescents and Adults
Appeals to youngsters as older siblings, babysitters and to adults as parents, grandparents and caregivers. Teaches how to keep children safe from poison by poison proofing the home, and how to handle an emergency. Information is available about food poisoning, poisonous plants, holiday hazards, bee sting reactions, guidelines for new parents and more. A pharmacist can be requested to address prescription drug/food interactions and other concerns of medications.
Approx. 30 to 60 minutes.

ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS

Drugs, Smoking and Alcohol (Grades 3-12)
Interactive materials are used to discuss the effects of drugs, tobacco and alcohol. Material is presented in age appropriate formats from 3rd to 12th grade levels.
Approx. 30 minutes.

Babysitting (ages 11-16)
This is a short, basic information session on responsible babysitting. Encourages students to attend an additional 1-day Supper sitter course.
Approx. 30 minutes

Safety and First Aid (Grade 3-adult)
Presented by Southeast personnel , these programs may include lecture segments, skill demonstrations or certification requirements. Programs will vary in length and some may require a registration fee.
Minimum 1 hour for lecture segment
