Southeast advocate of poison education

Southeast Missouri Hospital has been actively involved with poison education since 1980 when it became the eighth satellite for the St. Louis Regional Poison Center at Cardinal Glennon Memorial Hospital for Children in St. Louis.

Roughly 85 percent of all poisonings can be treated at home with advice from the professionals at the Poison Center.

That means that only about 15 percent of the calls received from this area are then referred to Southeast's Emergency Department for treatment.

To Use the Poison Center Hotline

1. Dial 1-800-222-1222. This National Toll-Free Poison Hotline connects you to the state center where you are located. This number is monitored 24 hours a day.

2. Tell the nurse or pharmacist on duty what type of poisoning has occurred.

3. If there is anything you can do to help immediately, the nurse or pharmacist on call will give you instructions. If the poisoning is serious enough to warrant medical attention, you will be instructed to take the patient to the Emergency Department at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
