Surgical Team Firsts

The cardiothoracic surgeons utilize leading edge technology and procedures such as off-pump bypass, which has been a significant development for area heart patients.

Unlike traditional bypass surgery during which the heart is stopped and the heart-lung machine is used to maintain blood flow, the off-pump bypass procedure allows the patient's heart to remain beating. Patients who have off-pump bypass are able to breathe on their own quicker and return to normal lifestyles sooner.

The latest advancement available is heart bypass surgery using an aortic connector, a new medical tool recently approved by the FDA that allows a surgeon to do bypass on the beating heart without sutures.

Southeast Hospital's heart surgery team have brought many cardiovascular surgery advances to the area. They were the first in the region to offer:

  • All arterial bypass grafting, including radial artery
  • All valve repairs, including stentless insertions
  • Off-pump coronary artery bypass (surgery performed without stopping the heart);
  • Bypass with endoscopic vein harvesting;
  • Bypass using aortic connector
  • Endovascular AAA (abdominal aortic aneurysm) repairs.

In addition, Southeast Hospital’s heart surgery team became one of the first in the nation qualified to offer a technique allowing the connection of saphenous vein grafts to the aorta without sutures. The goal of the procedure is to reduce the risk of complications and shorten hospital stays.
