To attain Magnet designation, a Hospital must achieve an Excellent Rating in ALL 14 of the following Standards.

Below is a complete listing of all standards and sub-sets that must be achieved before receiving Magnet Status:

Magnet Recogition Program Measurement Criteria

Standard I: ASSESSMENT

Professional Nurses:
1.1 Identify assessment elements including nurse-sensitive quality indicators appropriate to a given organizational context.
1.2 Use evidence-based assessment processes, current research findings, and current practice guidelines and standards to modify data collection elements and systems.
1.3 Monitor and evaluate assessment processes that are sensitive to the unique diverse needs of individuals and target populations.
1.4 Identify and document the necessary resources to support data collection, and advocate for appropriate resources.
1.5 Analyze workflow-related processes to assure effectiveness and efficiency of assessment processes in the target environment.
1.6 Devise criteria and establish procedures to assure confidentiality of data.
1.7 Facilitate the integration of unified assessment processes developed in collaboration with other health care disciplines and across the continuum of care.

Standard II: DIAGNOSIS

Professional Nurses:
2.1 Identify and advocate for adequate resources for nurses so that data related to decision-making and analysis of interdisciplinary process are analyzed and desired outcomes achieved.
2.2 Assist and support staff in developing and maintaining competency in the diagnostic process.

Standard III: IDENTIFICATION OF OUTCOMES

Professional Nurses:
3.1 Participate in the design, development, and evaluation of interdisciplinary processes that identify desired client-centered outcomes.
3.2 Participate in the identification, development, and utilization of databases that include nursing-sensitive measures that positively impact client-centered outcomes.

Standard IV: PLANNING

Professional Nurses:
4.1 Contribute to the development, modification, prioritization, documentation, continuous improvement, and evaluation of organization systems that facilitate the delivery of nursing services across the continuum of care.
4.2 Ensure that organization systems that facilitate the delivery of nursing services across the continuum of care are integrated with the organization's strategic plan.
4.3 Foster and encourage interdisciplinary planning collaboration that focuses on the individuals and populations served.
4.4 Integrate and implement evidence-based nursing practice findings into organizational planning processes, across the continuum of care.
4. 5 Develop and maintain competency in the planning and change processes in a manner that promotes creativity in the development of alternative plans for achieving desired, client-centered, cost-effective outcomes.

Standard V.: IMPLEMENTATION

Professional Nurses:
5.1 Implement and improve systems, including but not limited to the identification and allocation of human and financial resources that are evidence-based and assures that interventions are safe, effective, efficient, and culturally sensitive.
5.2 Participate in interdisciplinary decision-making regarding the development and implementation of organizational systems, and the specification of resources necessary for implementation of the plan.

Standard VI: EVALUATION

Professional Nurses:
6.1 Use processes and resources that ensure that data are available to empower staff to participate meaningfully in clinical decision-making, and in creation of clinical innovations, related to care delivery systems.
6.2 Advocate for educational opportunities for staff, specific to current interventions.
6.3 Participate in the systematic, interdisciplinary, and ongoing evaluation of programs, processes, and desired client-centered outcomes.
6.4 Have sufficient time to critically think about the care delivered to clients, and evaluate desired client-centered outcomes.
6.5 Participate in formal and informal organizational committees, teams, and task forces to evaluate client-centered outcomes, and contribute to the innovative changes that occur related to the delivery of care to clients.

Standard VII: QUALITY OF CARE AND ADMINISTRATIVE PRACTICE

Professional Nurses:
7.1 Identify key quality indicator's that need to be monitored and evaluated.
7.2 Use benchmarkable data from internal and external sources to identify opportunities for improvement.
7.3 Develop, plan, implement, and evaluate systems that improve organizational performance.
7.4 Participate in interdisciplinary continuous quality improvement teams.

Standard VIII: PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL

Professional Nurses:
8.1 Engage in self-performance appraisal on a regular basis, identifying areas of strength as well as areas of professional/practice development.
8.2 Seek constructive feedback regarding his/her own practice
8.3 Take action to achieve goals identified during performance appraisal
8.4 Participate in established peer review process

 

Standard IX: EDUCATION

Professional Nurses:
9.1 Seek additional knowledge and skills appropriate to the practice setting by developing and/or participating in educational programs and activities, conferences, workshops, interdisciplinary professional meetings, and self-directed learning.
9.2 Participate in educational opportunities that address current evidence-based care strategies, technological advances, and other skills so that knowledge, skills, and abilities promote quality in the delivery of services to clients.
9.3 Pursue formal education, certification, and other professional development opportunities.
9.4.Network with peers at the local, state and national levels.

Standard X: COLLEGIALITY

Professional Nurses:
10.1 Contribute to the professional development of students, staff and colleagues.
10.2 Share knowledge and skills with colleagues and others, and act as a role model/mentor.
10.3 Practice in an environment that supports and encourages involvement in professional nursing organizations and activities at the local, state, national and international levels.
10.4 Practice in an environment that fosters two-way communication between nurses serving in formal leadership positions, and nurses providing direct care.
10.5 Contribute to an environment of mutual respect and understanding by using mechanisms that are in place to promote staff participation in activities designed to improve relationships among staff, other disciplines, and between staff and clients.

Standard XI: ETHICS

Professional Nurses:
11.1 Advocate on behalf of personnel and recipients of services.
11.2 Maintain privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, resident, client staff and organizational data.
11.3 Adhere to the ANA Code of Nurses
11.4 Foster a non-discriminatory climate in which care is delivered in a manner that is culturally sensitive and that is reflective to the cultural diversity that exists within the organization.
11.5 Use the established processes to address ethical issues that arise.

Standard XII: COLLABORATION

Professional Nurses:
12.1 Collaborate with members of other departments and disciplines in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services.
12.2 Collaborate with physicians and other members of the health care team to provide seamless delivery of services across the continuum of care.
12.3 Collaborate with peers, other staff members and department, as well as individuals and entities external to the organization to develop and implement recruitment and retention programs.
12.4 Serve in formal leadership positions, participate in the peer review and credentialing and/or privileging process for advanced practice registered nurses.

Standard XIII: RESEARCH

Professional Nurses:
13.1 Collaborate with nurse researchers and researchers from other disciplines, identify contemporary practice issues to be studied.
13.2 Use established mechanisms or review of proposed research studies, including protection of rights human subjects.
13.3 Use research findings in clinical practice.
13.4 Identify resources needed to support research projects.
13.5 Practice in an environment that uses continuous quality improvement activities as the basis for ongoing research activities
13.6 Promote research so that the nursing practice is evidence-based and knowledge driven.
13.7 Promote understanding use of organizational, management, and nursing theories and research.

Standard XIV: RESOURCE UTILIZATION

Professional Nurses:
14.1 Consider safety, outcomes, effectiveness, cost and social impact when developing and implementing a new program or practice innovation.
14.2 Practice in an environment that permits and expects staff to practice in accordance with licensure/registration requirements, as well as their educational preparation and professional practice experience.
14.3 Delegate to others responsibilities that are appropriate to the licensure/registration, education, and experience of these individuals.
14.4 Set priorities for resource allocation.
14.5 Participate in workforce design and/or role delineation projects and make recommendations for change in the practice environment.
14. 6 Serve in formal leadership positions, ensure that appropriate resources are allocated and that education occurs when creating and implementing new roles, programs, or practice innovations.
14. 7 Serve in formal leadership positions, advocate for appropriate fiscal and human resources to accomplish the work/goals of the nursing division/department.
