of the population, are living with a TBI.
Regular meetings are held on the first Monday
of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the Generations Center
Classroom at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
Special social events are also held at various
times throughout the year.

The Brain Injury Support Group
of the Cape Girardeau Region was formed to address
local issues involving brain injury. The group's
goals include:
|
- Providing support
to the brain injured and their families.
By establishing a network with others
in the same situation, it is possible
to find new solutions to some very complicated
problems, or maybe just learn that you
are not alone in facing those problems
- Increasing awareness that
traumatic brain injury changes lives.
The person who survives a TBI with a disability
must eventually admit that adjustments
have to be made. The adjustments might
be only temporary. Much of the time the
adjustments are for a lifetime.
|
- Educating the community
that traumatic brain injury is preventable.
The group and individuals within the group
are commited to reducing the total number
of brain injuries resulting from automobile
accidents, falls and violence.
- Working with business and civic
leaders to increase services
to the brain injured. Survivors of brain
injury are still a part of the community
and contribute to it. When special needs
are met, they can become more productive
members of society. Through modification
of the workplace, schools, business and
healthcare facilities, persons with TBI
are recognized as just what they are --
people who happen to have a brain injury.
