| Southeast's
inpatient rehabilitation unit bridges gap from hospital
to home |
| When a backward fall from a ladder
put river barge worker James Morrow in the hospital
with a spinal cord injury, he received the specialized
services of Southeast Missouri Hospital's Comprehensive
Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit.
After a month on Southeast's rehab and intensive
physical and occupational therapy, Morrow, 18,
returned to Elco, IL to continue his recovery.
"They (the Rehab staff) are the nicest people
ever," Morrow says. "The nurses, the
therapists, everyone works together with the patient
always in mind. It was great.
About 95 percent of the unit's patients
are able to return to their own homes.
Unit accreditation by the Missouri Department
of Health and Medicare "is one more step
forward in the excellence of care for orthopedic
patients at Southeast," adds R. August Ritter,
M.D., orthopedics.
Neurologist Randall L. Stahly,
D.O., chair of
the hospital's Section of Neurology, says the
unit "is a welcome extension of the busy
neurological and neurosurgery services in Cape
Girardeau. The unit provides needed rehab beds
and expertise to upgrade our rehabilitation
capability
in the tri-state area." Patients cared for in the unit include those
recovering from amputations, strokes, multiple
trauma, neurological disorders, orthopedic conditions,
poly-arthritis and traumatic brain injury. The unit features 17 private rooms, a solarium
for activities and meal service and an activities
of daily living area.
