Jonathan Atwood,
has been awarded the Area United Way’s 16th
Annual Volunteer Recognition Award in the Youth
Division.
Jonathan, who is 16 years old, has been a dedicated
volunteer at Southeast Missouri Hospital since
he became eligible for participation in the Junior
Volunteer program at age 14.
Since June 2001, Jon has consistently volunteered
two days every week of the year and often responds
to urgent calls for additional assistance with
special projects. He has over 500 hours of service
to his credit and has worked in many departments
including the Lab, Emergency, Pediatrics, Radiology,
Physical Therapy, Nursing Administration, Materials
Management, Volunteer Services, Business Office,
Marketing, Biomed and Generations. |

Jonathan is shown here with United Way
Director Nancy Jernigan, left, and southeast
Volunteer Services director Marge Sullivan.

Since he is home-schooled,
he is able to volunteer throughout the year.
Director of Volunteer Services
Marge Sullivan submitted the nomination on Jon’s
behalf. She commented, “It is difficult
to quantify the number of lives Jon has touched
and the amount of assistance he has contributed.
Looking at the number of departments in which
he has worked, he has easily assisted more than
500 staff members, always with a willing heart
and bright smile.”
Jon is the son of Jim and Becky
Atwood of Cape Girardeau. Jon’s father worked
at Southeast as an orderly in 1965; and his grandmother,
Margot Atwood, worked as a registered nurse for
many years on Southeast’s Pediatrics floor.
The award was presented yesterday
at the United Way recognition luncheon which was
sponsored by Southeast Missouri Hospital. Assistant
Administrator Pat Bira spoke on “The Importance
of Volunteerism” during the program. |
