Nurse Residency Program

Purpose

The Southeast Missouri Hospital Residency Program for nurses is designed for graduate nurses, nurses wishing to re-enter the nursing workforce, and nurses seeking a practice environment change. The nurses will have the opportunity to continue their professional development through a sheltered mentoring experience that will include classroom learning and supervised clinical experience.

Objectives

By the completion of this full time 16-week program, the nurse will be able to:

  • Demonstrate clinical competency as a registered nurse in a multidisciplinary capacity.
  • Demonstrate sound critical thinking process for clinical situations.
  • Organize work and utilize time management techniques in the work setting.
  • Develop and demonstrate customer service skills.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care for multiple patients.
  • Demonstrate effective patient and family teaching.
  • Identify patient needs and make appropriate referrals to hospital and community resources.
  • Provide sound nursing care reflective of current standards of practice.
  • Assume responsibility for their own learning outcomes.

Residency Rotations

After successfully completing orientation, the nurse will rotate through various areas agreed upon by the nurse and the Program Manager. The areas may include critical care, Medical-surgical, maternal-child, and perioperative units.
