Southeast Missouri Hospital's OB and Gynecology Center is staffed by 90 Registered
Nurses, LPNs and technicians. Together, they have
more than 900 years of professional experience.
That kind of experience pays off for expectant
parents, said Carmen Cox, BSN, RN, CLC, assistant
nurse manager on OB.
"The level of experience comes through in
the teamwork you see and a smoother running operation,"
said Cox.
"Everyone knows what they're supposed to
do and when. Experienced people think better on
their feet. They don't have to look it up in a
book or call the doctor for every little thing."

Madonna Sanders, MSN, RN, CNA, director of maternal
child services, said experience can help make
the difference between a good outcome and an excellent
one. "There are a lot of potential problems
during the birth of a baby. The experience of
your staff can help head off problems," she
said.
All nurses in the labor and delivery area are
Registered Nurses. In all, two thirds of the OB
staff are Registered Nurses or LPNs. In addition,
23 have completed the additional step of becoming
certified in OB, which Sanders said is higher
than the national average.
Peggy Uhrhan, LPN, works with many longtime familiar
faces. She has worked at Southeast's birthing
center for 19 years.
"I love it," she said. "When I
went to school I wanted to work with babies, and
I still enjoy it to this day."
She also enjoys the camaraderie among the OB staff.
"Everyone works well together," said
Uhrhan. "You can count on everyone. That's
the difference experience makes."
Rebecca Kluesner, RN, has nine years of nursing
experience, seven of those spent working on OB.
She likens the OB staff to a family. They not
only care about the patients, but they care for
each other. "When a staff member has a crisis,
everyone helps out. You don't even have to ask,"
she said.
"Experience does count. I'm happy to have
someone with a lot of years of experience by my
side," said Kluesner.
With more than 900 years of combined experience,
Southeast's OB staff members are the region's
"Baby Experts."
